Hi.
I don't know anything about programming but a good start might be the website http://www.blindprogramming.com/
Good luck

already looked over that site, it doesn't have any compilers or coders that i can see.

Hmm Java and Eclipse might be a good start (Elcipse is the editor/compiler, you need that and Java Runtime Engine or jre installed).
go to www.eclipse.org for instructions. Java is not the only god language of course but it's object-oriented, platform independent and has a couple of cool features and practically everything you want is availible for it for free.
c#/vb.net are Microsoft languages practically, you can get the console compilers for free with the .net kit (now v2.0) however you do not get the IDE (programming environment) called visual studio for free, it's really good but it's expensive .. probably around $300 for student edition (I'm guessing).
c/c++ is always classic and will tech you all the programming basics and there are tons of compilers and free IDEs out there, UltraEdit even has a studio out with some of the compilers availible for it, I'd be interested to check it out but I'm too bogged downwith development to have time.
For html/web stuff (php / mysql) you can get a lot of different things as well, but I'm not as much into that but I might soon be.
Basically it doesn't matter what you do, I think I'd recommend Java as a good starting point just because it's free and lots of features are avilible for it, the concepts of programming are the same for practically all the languages, only difference is implementation and strength (Perl e.g. is amazing for reports, pattern matching and so forth but does not offer object orientation or strong typing and can be awfully sloppy).
Good luck

Hi.
Auto-it is another good language.
That's what I use to write my games.
It's a bit hard to learn, but it's easy when you get the hang of it.
There is a development starter pack on the x-sight development page.
The language can be downloaded from
http://autoitscript.com

You can code mostly in notepad and then just get a compiler to make it into a .exe for you.
Note that if you learn something like php perl or asp, you won't have to compile the code, you just save the file as name.asp or what ever you code in and then you have asp or what ever installed on your computer.
Of the top of my head the only one that you can't use notepad for is flash, but i guess your not gonna want to learn that.
BEN.
